Luxury in the Namib Desert: andBeyond transforms its Sossusvlei Desert Lodge into a design masterpiece

The Sossusvlei Desert Lodge owned by luxury travel organizer andBeyond is located in the heart of the Namib Desert and was considered revolutionary when it opened 20 years ago. Now completely remodeled and refurbished to re-open in October 2019 as a spectacular design oasis, with a visionary architecture that fits perfectly into the pristine desert landscape. As part of the redesign, ten pavilions made of glass, stone and steel, which will withstand the extreme elements in the desert and at the same time provide the highest level of comfort. Ceiling windows offer views of the stars from every corner of the suites at night, while glass fronts provide uninterrupted views of the seemingly endless desert.

Each suite has its own private plunge pool. An ingenious water recycling system compensates for the evaporated water from the tanks. All private terraces are enlarged so that the silence of the desert can be enjoyed in total privacy. Brand new is the family designed “Star Dune Suite” with two bedrooms connected by a living room with dining area. Design elements that play with light and shadow run through the entire architecture.

A new fitness and spa area offers elevated desert views. Sustainability is guaranteed, among other things, by a solar system that will generate 65 percent of the electricity, as well as the bottling of water on site and the use of recycled glass bottles. Ideally located in the 215,000-acre NamibRand Nature Reserve – one of Southern Africa’s largest private wildlife sanctuaries and the only sunken area on the continent – the lodge offers a range of activities ranging from desert tours, quad biking, guided walks and mountain biking over hot air balloon rides to visiting old sand rock paintings.
